Liar, Liars Liars Be a Super Detector and Know How People Lie

Hi Everyone

To the people who've been following me since I began this channel 13 months ago I salute you! Thanks for keeping up with me and supporting. Thanks to those who value my work and literally support with their own dollars on my Patreon channel as well. It was a bit weird asking for people to support when I first asked, but hey I got people to come along and help...awesome.

So today's post is about you detecting the lie in others. I will go over 10 different steps you can use to check to see if the person you are wanting know could be hoodwinking you is literally lying to you.

How To Detect If Someone is Lying to You

Touching the Face

Touching the face. A person who is describing something to you and giving you a reason to do something or is withholding information can sometimes touch their face in an a number of ways. If the person touches their nose, or itches it, then yes, sometimes it is a known lying mannerism. But you need to look at the context, the conversation and if there are a cluster of other non verbal signs such as jiggling the legs, fast blinking, elongated blinking etc. We touch our nose because when we lie the blood rushes away from the face towards the vital organs, legs and hands. If we do nothing with our hands and legs, the blood rushes back to our face hence the itching.

Note though, that itching is also a response to stress.

Elongated Blinking

In another words long blinking.  When some people lie, they subconsciously do not want or like the truth to come out hence their long blink. They feel in order to hide that uncomfortable feeling, they can do this by hiding their eyes so that the viewer cannot detect how they really feel about the subject or topic at hand. It often is a sign that the person does not like what they are talking about either.

Long Eye contact

We mistakenly believe that flitting away the eyes means the person is lying. Well yes it very well can. The person is not holding eye contact and are uncomfortable with you finding their lies out. This is very true with young children, however as adults holding eye contact is more likely to be a mannerisms chosen by the liar than flitting their eyes away. The liar knows about the many people think not holding eye contact means lying, so they over do it by looking directly at their subject/person with a flat stare (no emotion).

The following person is a suspected Russian spy to the UK and she holds eye contact a little too long during this interview.

Vocal Pitch

Often when people lie, they tend use their higher pitch when speaking. Think of using the telephone, when you first speak you tend to use your weak, higher pitched voice. When you realise it was just your mother asking you to bring a dessert over for dinner this weekend you tend to lower your voice and resonate better. When we use our weak voice, we are subconsciously trying to protect ourselves by holding our breath, ready for the flight or fight response. Often women use it to try and compel men to fancy them as they are using that vulnerable childlike voice. Think the Kardashians and Paris Hilton. Women who lie can sometimes use their weak voice, especially in interrogations and interviews. Check out this woman who murdered Selena. Yolanda uses a child like voice to portray herself as innocent.

Also check out Jody Arias who murdered her boyfriend and used a weak voice to portray innocence.

Dry Throat

Often when we are under stress our throat dries out hence our need for a drink of water to quench the thirst.  This dry throat is the flight or fight response of the body due to a perceived threat. Another way of detecting lying in regard to the throat are:

  • Clearing the throat. Sometimes people do this to clear the mucus from their throat for a clear way of answering the question or responding to a threatening question. Also it gives the person time to thinking about what they are going to say before they say it.
  • Hard Swallow. Whenever you see someone make a hard swallow before answering or just after giving an answer take special note. Think about what they were saying and the context surrounding that. Sometimes people hard swallow for the flight and fight response. They are getting reading to take on the threat.
All of these actions help provide moisture to the throat.  When your fight or fight system is activated, your body make take fluids - like saliva and water - and move them to the areas they feel need them more.

Arms Across Body

Pretty typical defensive posture. Of course you need to keep in mind what the weather is doing. But generally when you see someone folding their arms, they are being defensive about something. Just dig a little deeper. In my experience, if you look a little deeper into what is being discussed talked about and a person is folding their arms, then they could be lying or defensive.

Fidgeting

When you see people twiddle their thumbs, jiggle their legs or move a part of their body in a repetitive mode over a period of time, they are stressed to some level. Depending on the context, you should dig a little deeper if you see someone fidgeting while defending themselves or discussing how something went missing. Our limpid system is in overdrive and needs to express the built up energy, so that's why we see fidgeting and or jiggling.

Feet

Like fidgeting where the feet are pointing and how can tell us a lot about where someone could by lying. If the feet are moving and shuffling or the person is stepping on their tippy toes while talking, take some time to think about what they are saying. They could be trying to get one over you. If a person likes you they will point their feet at you. If they want to get out of a situation they tend to point their feet at the door (ready for flight and fight). If they raise their feet up while they are talking to you, it means they are making a barrier between them and you, so time to dig a bit deeper into what they are trying to hide or keep hidden.

Stillness and Stiffness

When someone is lying sometimes instead of moving around like someone who has ants in their pants, a person will sit and stand extremely still. A stiff upper body. They feel that they are getting ready for the onslaught and want to fight or fly away. It can indicate a lying person. Please see the Russian Spy above for her very stiff upper body.

Duping Delight

This is one of my favourite ways to detect whether someone is lying. When someone has just told a blatant lie as a joke, often they will laugh. Duping is very similar, however it's a little more subtle. Duping delight is a microexpression where someone laughs but tries to cover it with a 'straight' face. It's  a subconscious way of releasing tension and 'getting' one over the person they are lying to. Now it can take a while to detect duping delight, but once you see it, it's pretty universal with everyone. Younger children are easier to detect than adults. So if you're interested have a chat to a child and ask they to give you two truths and lie. Then see if they display duping delight with the lie. Some kids are great at lying though.

Well there you have it, 10 ways people can lie to you. There are of course many other tells which tell us if people are lying or not. However these are the ones I come across on a daily basis, so I thought I'd share with you all.
